It is not just the sea and sun which is attracting tourists to Croatia this year. The eastern Croatian city of Osijek recorded record tourist results this summer.
Numerous and well-organised cultural, entertainment and sports events contributed to the excellent numbers, Osijek Mayor Ivan Radić pointed out during a tour of the traditional Osijek Antiques Fair.
“The antiques fair has become a unique brand of Osijek. This is confirmed by numerous visitors and exhibitors every first Saturday of the month. Suffice it to say that there is a kind of “waiting list” among the exhibitors who come from Croatia, but also from neighbouring Hungary, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.”
All this has helped contribute to excellent tourist results. In terms of overnight stays, Osijek had a record August with 12% more overnight stays achieved than in the pre-pandemic year of 2019.
“In the first 8 months of this year, arrivals in Osijek are 55% better than last year,” said Mayor Radić.
“In mid-August, we opened the renovated swimming pools at Copacabana. In 45 days, the pools record almost 35 thousand visitors. We don’t stop there. A rich autumn awaits us, but also winter with Advent, which is actually the crown of all tourist events,” concludes Mayor Radić.
The antiques fair is held every first Saturday of the month in King Držislav Park. It is a favourite local manifestation where visitors can find something new and unique every time, and it is based on the centuries-old tradition of fairs in the centre of the Fortress on St. Trinity.
