Croatia have started off their European Nations Cup with a narrow 20-19 over Malta in strong winds and rain in the Dalmatian city of Makarska on Saturday.
Solid Croatian defence, and an intercept runaway try from halfway from captain Tonci Buzov was the difference on the day. Croatia went behind early in the first half 6-0 but managed to turn it around and go into the break leading 13-6.
Buzov’s try and a crunching tackle by Croatia’s Australian based five-eight Jai Ayoub in the dying stages saw Croatia take the points. Croatia now travel to Switzerland for their next match on 3 November.
