Southampton name Croatian Ivan Jurić as new manager

Premier League club Southampton announced on Saturday that Croatian Ivan Jurić will take over as their new manager.

The announcement comes just before their match against Fulham on Sunday.

Jurić steps in to replace Russell Martin, who was sacked following Southampton’s heavy 5-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.

After signing an 18-month contract, Jurić shared his excitement about the role. “I’m very happy to join Southampton,” he said. “This is a big challenge, but I’m optimistic because I see a team with potential to improve. Building a strong connection with the fans is crucial. I want an aggressive style of play, and I believe Southampton supporters will enjoy that approach.”

The Croatian coach previously managed AS Roma earlier this season, taking charge of 12 matches as Daniele De Rossi’s successor before being let go.

His coaching career also includes stints at Serie A clubs Genoa and Torino.

Currently, Southampton are struggling at the bottom of the Premier League table with just five points from 16 matches and only one victory so far this season.

Jurić emphasised the importance of adopting a more aggressive and pressing style of play. “We need to quickly shift our mindset because this is how I envision football,” he explained.

As a player, Jurić began his career at Hajduk Split and represented Croatia five times in 2009.

Fans will be hoping that Jurić can bring fresh energy and turn around Southampton’s fortunes as they fight to climb out of relegation trouble.
