Split Airport, the hub for tourism on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast, has recorded its busiest day of the year on Saturday, signalling what could be a record-breaking year if things continue…
What is considered the ‘peak’ weekend in the season, 110 flights, carrying over 26,000 passengers landed at Split airport from all over Europe on Saturday, making it by far the busiest day of the year. Split Airport’s Mate Melvan says that most weekends from now until the middle of August will be similar in terms of traffic.
Croatia will be hoping that not only are the tourists coming, but whilst they are here they are spending as well. Minister of Tourism Darko Lorencin says that 2008’s record-breaking year, when 7.5 billion euros was generated from tourism, could be under threat in 2014. Last year 7.2 billion euros was generated, but already arrivals and income are up more than 10% this year.
