The Croatian Tennis Federation has confirmed on Wednesday the venue for the Davis Cup semi-final against the USA.
Croatia will meet the USA in Split from 14-16 September 2018 the Croatian Tennis Federation said in a statement. The tie will be played on clay in a purpose-built open-air stadium at Žnjan, which is what the players requested.
“Since Croatia does not have a tennis stadium which can meet the requirements of Davis Cup rules for this stage of the competition, a court and stands will be built with the location of Žnjan selected as a suitable location,” the Federation said.
A 6,000-seat temporary stadium will be put up for the tie on the Žnjan beach area which is currently under development and recently hosted a concert from rock band Simple Minds.
The official signing of the agreement between the City of Split and the Croatian Tennis Federation will take place once the official sponsorship from the government is confirmed.
“I would like to thank the Major of Pula Mr. Boris Miletic who showed they were ready for the Davis Cup semi-final to be held in the Pula Arena,” Franjo Luković, Croatian Tennis Federation President said.
The last time Split hosted a Davis Cup match was back in 2010 at Spaladium Arena when Croatia took on Serbia.
Croatia booked its place in the semi-final of the Davis Cup after beating Kazakhstan in Varazdin 3-1 earlier this year. Croatia will be lledby World No.4 Marin Cilic and the ever-improving Borna Coric.
