Strong 4.0 magnitude earthquake rattles central Croatia

25 February 2025 – A magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck central Croatia on Tuesday, shaking the region and alarming residents.

The strong earthquake was recorded near Petrinja on Tuesday, 25 February 2025, at 12:52 PM.

The Croatian Seismological Service reported that the epicentre was near Taborište, around 3 km southeast of Petrinja.

The earthquake had a magnitude of 4.0 on the Richter scale, with an intensity of V – VI on the EMS scale.

The tremor was widely felt in the surrounding areas, including Sisak and Glina.

Many residents took to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) website to share their experiences. “It felt like a bomb exploded,” wrote one resident. “A multi-ton excavator shook like a toy,” said another. “It was a strong jolt, terrifying,” added a third.

While no major damage has been reported, the tremor was widely felt, with many describing it as a powerful and frightening jolt.

Branka Bakšić Mitić, the deputy mayor of Glina, told 24sata: “I was in the office when everything started shaking. It was very strong, and we were all scared. Fortunately, no damage has been reported so far, but many frightened citizens have called us. People are in fear.”

Locals in Sisak also described the event as intense. “It shook us well, like a bomb went off,” one person reported. “It was short but very strong,” added another.

There are currently no reports of significant damage or injuries, but the tremor has left many residents shaken. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and urge people to remain cautious.

In December 2020, a devastating 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Petrinja,, causing widespread destruction, killing seven people, and leaving thousands without homes.
