One of Croatia’s brightest ever tennis hopes has made the perfect start in her preparations to become a full-time pro on the WTA Tour from January next year. Dubrovnik-born Ana Konjuh has made the semi-final of the strong ITF Challenger tournament in Dubai…
Konjuh, who this year rose to junior number one in the world after winning both the Australian Open singles and doubles titles, beat Ukranian Lyudmyla Kichenok to reach the semi-final of the $75,000 tournament. Ana will start her life as a full-time pro on the WTA Tour in January, and has recieved a wild card for the qualifying draw at the first Grand Slam of the year – the Australian Open.
According to the rules, Konjuh (15) can spend two more years playing junior tournaments, but the powerful Croatian is keen to start her goal of becoming the number 1 in women’s tennis by the time she is 21. Ana is currently ranked 272 in the world and has a long way to go, but if her success as a junior is any indication, then her goal might not be that unrealistic.
