ZAGREB, 10 April (Hina) – The Neurology Clinic of the Clinical Hospital Centre (KBC) in the northern Adriatic city of Rijeka has received the prestigious Diamond ESO Angels Award for 2024 for excellence in stroke treatment, under the patronage of the European Stroke Organisation, the hospital announced on Monday.
At a press conference, the head of the clinic, Vladimira Vuletić, said that the award from the European Stroke Organisation is the result of consistent hard work and dedication to patient care.
“Timely and high-quality interventions can save lives or reduce the consequences of stroke for patients, including disability. This achievement is thanks to the efforts of the many doctors, interventional radiologists, anaesthesiologists, neurologists, vascular surgeons, as well as colleagues in general practice and emergency medical services,” Vuletić said.

“We also earned this award through our continuous efforts to introduce new methods,” she added.
Vuletić noted that the Diamond ESO Angels Award is presented quarterly, with the clinic’s performance and achievements evaluated each quarter.
Rijeka’s Neurology Clinic is the only one in Croatia, and among the few in Europe, to have received all four consecutive quarterly awards in the same year.
Award recognises hospital excellence in stroke treatment
The European Stroke Organisation aims to ensure there are as many centres of excellence as possible across Europe – an important consideration for tourists and other travellers who want to be assured of access to high-quality medical care, Vuletić pointed out.
The award will be officially presented at the European Stroke Organisation Conference in Helsinki in May.
The director of KBC Rijeka, Alen Ružić, noted that the award is very difficult to earn due to the strict criteria.
“The Neurology Clinic is constantly improving its professional practice and achieving excellent results. The hospital’s management fully supports its efforts by approving essential staffing, specialist training and the education of doctors at the world’s leading clinics,” Ružić added.

The Diamond ESO Angels Awards programme is part of the Angels initiative, launched in cooperation with the European Stroke Organisation.
These awards recognise and honour hospitals that have achieved excellence in stroke care, encouraging quality monitoring and continuous improvement in patient care.
Participation in the ESO Angels Awards programme complements the European Stroke Organisation’s certification platform and stroke care guidelines.
The aim is to build a network of certified institutions that meet high standards in organisation, knowledge, skills, experience and the quality of care for stroke patients.
