The road connecting the upper Croatian coastal destinations of Senj and Karlobag is hailed by bikers as the most beautiful in Europe. Yet, simultaneously, it contends as one of the most dangerous roads in the world.
Bikers have crowned the road the section of the Adriatic Highway from Senj to Karlobag as Europe’s most beautiful route.
Its sharp bends and serpentine twists, a painful memory for generations, are their greatest thrill. An exhilarating and challenging path, boasting 32 black spots, seriously competes with the world’s most perilous roads.

Andrea Buča, the author and director of the new HRT series “Na magistrali,” spoke with a motorcyclist who reveals what makes this road so thrilling.
“It’s the most challenging road for every biker, especially those riding sports bikes. The fact is, it’s about calculating how quickly you can reach Karlobag, which bend can be mastered how. It’s not something to boast about, but people love it; it’s adrenaline,” Jure Miškulin told HRT.
Slower Travel in the Past
In the old days, with old cars, the highway was much slower.
“Motorcyclists could also ride fast back then, but driving has changed a lot because there’s much more traffic and greater risk. In the past, you could make a mistake, enter a bend too fast, end up on the other side, but everything was fine because there wasn’t so much traffic.
Today, mistakes are not forgiven, and everyone knows we can’t drive at 50 km/h, which is the limit,” a motorcyclist commented.
Among the world’s coastal roads, few match the breathtaking beauty of Croatia’s Jadranska magistrala. This scenic route, officially known as the D8 state road or Adriatic Highway, spans over 643 km along the eastern Adriatic coast.
