The first-ever retirement village in Croatia is built

Retirement villages, as seen in the U.S. or U.K., is not a Croatian concept, where ageing is largely supported by family and community.

Multi-generational households remain prevalent, and elderly individuals often live with or near relatives. While Croatia has care homes (“domovi za starije”) and some assisted living options, these focus on those needing significant medical or daily assistance rather than independent retirement communities.

Now, Croatia’s first-ever retirement villages have been completed in Sisak-Moslavina County.

In record time, three county-run villages were built in Glina, Petrinja, and Sisak, featuring a total of 166 modern prefabricated homes.

“We are the first county in Croatia to initiate such a project. It is truly unique, as these homes will have long-term use. The initial idea was to provide accommodation for earthquake victims while their homes were being rebuilt. Given the growing elderly population, we saw the need for additional housing for retirees and combined both into this large-scale project,” said County Prefect Ivan Celjak.

Modern, Fully Equipped Homes

The low-energy houses range from 35 to 45 square metres and are fully furnished with modern appliances. Depending on the size, each home can accommodate up to four people.

Some houses are specially designed for people with disabilities or limited mobility. Each home includes a terrace, a designated parking space, and a green area that can be used as a garden or flower bed.

Currently, the villages are providing temporary housing for people whose homes were damaged in the earthquake. Once their houses are rebuilt, the villages will become part of the county’s official retirement home system.

“The temporary residents are very happy, and we are glad we could provide them with quality accommodation while they wait for their homes to be rebuilt. Once they move out, these villages will become some of the most modern retirement communities, not just in Croatia but beyond,” added Celjak.

Expansion Planned in Kutina

Following the success of these villages, Sisak-Moslavina County plans to build another retirement village in Kutina. This new settlement will consist of 25 houses, exclusively for senior residents.

All retirement village residents will receive the same care and support available in traditional retirement homes, ensuring a high quality of life in their later years.
