To say that the Schulz family from German are fond of the Croatian island of Rab is a understatement…
The Schulzs have not missed a summer holidays on the island since 1975.
“We came for the first time in 1975. We stayed for the first time with our young, little children,” Gerda Schulz explains to RTL.
Not only have the family visited the same island every year for more than 4 decades, they have also rented the same accommodation each time.
“All generations of the family have come. They (Gerda and Norbert) have been here from the start, and the kids now come to holiday with grandma and grandpa,” Nada Matušan, who owns the apartment where the Schulzs stay each summer says.
Nada has built up a strong friendship with her guests and has visited them three times in Germany.
“We are like a family. My husband has a birthday on 5 September and we celebrate it here,” Gerda added.
“My daughter was first time here when she one, now she is 22. My older son is now 18 and he first came at 18. My youngest son is 12 and he was here for the first time also when he was one,” son Harald Schulz says.
The family says that it is not just the beauty of the island that has kept them returning all these years.
“We like Rab a lot, not just because of the surroundings, but because the people are very open,” says Norbert.
“They have witnessed the late 70s and 80s and passed through the difficult period of the 90s and seen the changes in our history and our tourism development,” Rab Mayor Nikola Grgurić said.
