Top 10 foods to try in Croatia according to the BBC

Croatia’s culinary delights have caught the attention of the BBC, which recently unveiled its list of the top 10 must-try foods in the country. 

From mouthwatering seafood delicacies to hearty traditional dishes, Croatia offers a diverse and flavoursome gastronomic experience and here are the Top 10 foods, and drinks to try in Croatia according to BBC Good Food.

1. Black risotto

Crni rižot

Popular in Dalmatia, Black risotto, or crni rižot, is a cuttlefish and squid risotto which is given its unique presentation thanks to ink from the cuttlefish.

2. Boškarin

Meat from the white-grey, long-horned Istrian oxen. 

3. Brodetto

Brudet, brodet or brodeto is a rich fish stew made in Croatian regions of Dalmatia, Kvarner and Istria. It is made all year round and can come in various versions. Usually served with polenta which soaks up the tasty fish broth.

4. Buzara

5. Fritule

Fritule are little doughnuts which are commonly found at stands on the coast or at market stalls, particularly over the festive period.

‘Ispod peke’, or ‘under the bell’,is usually lamb, veal or octopus is placed with vegetables inside a dish with a metal lid. The dish is then cooked in an open fireplace by the hot coals and embers which are placed over the lid. The dish is left to cook slowly in its own juices until the meat is tender.
