When it comes to seafood delicacies, few dishes can rival the exquisite flavours and unique culinary experiences that mussels bring to the table.
Mussels are enjoyed in many different ways around the world with countries having their own traditions of preparing them. In the pursuit to find the best mussel dishes in the world, Taste Atlas has used audience ratings recently to compile the “10 Best Rated Mussel Dishes in the World” list.
This coveted compilation not only included celebrated entries from the likes of Peru, Spain, and Turkey but also shone a well-deserved spotlight on a Croatian favourite.
Coming in at no. 6 on the lis is Dagnje na buzaru.
“Dagnje na buzaru is a traditional dish of the Croatian coast prepared with mussels as the main ingredient. The shells are scrubbed, placed into a pot with lukewarm water, covered, and lightly heated until all of them crack open. Olive oil, garlic, parsley, and a bit of pepper are sautéed, then mixed with the mussels and maybe a few slices of lemon.
White wine is added for the final touch, and the dish is then shortly simmered. Before serving, dagnje na buzaru are often sprinkled with breadcrumbs for thickening, and the dish is then served with lots of bread on the side for mopping up the leftover juices,” Taste Atlas writes.
The Belgium favourite Moules-frites, which is mussels and fries, was the no.1 rated dish, followed by the Greek specialty Mydia, which is fresh mussels that steamed in red wine with fresh herbs, garlic in a red sauce.
