Zadar is set to once again celebrate the fusion of Croatian and Japanese culture as the Tuna, Sushi & Wine Festival returns from 9 to 13 April.
Now in its 10th edition, the festival will take place at Trg Petra Zoranića and Arsenal, bringing back its original concept of top-quality gastronomy, cultural exchange, and entertainment.
A Celebration of Croatian and Japanese Cuisine
Since its launch in 2015, the festival has become one of Zadar’s most exciting gastronomic events, showcasing the deep connection between Croatia and Japan through food. The event was originally created to highlight Zadar’s premium-quality tuna, which is highly valued in Japan, while also introducing locals to Japanese cuisine and cooking techniques. Over the years, it has helped popularise sushi and Japanese-style restaurants across the region.

This year, the festival welcomes back Japanese masterchef Akiyuki Nasu, who will lead a spectacular gala dinner on Friday, 11 April, at Arsenal. Nasu, owner of Il Gastro Sara restaurant in Okinawa, is renowned for his fusion of Mediterranean and Japanese flavours. His restaurant even has a dedicated section called Dalmatia in Okinawa Japan, where he serves Croatian wines and delicacies.
Spectacular Gala Dinner & Kaitai Show
The gala dinner will be the highlight of the festival, featuring an exclusive menu prepared by Akiyuki Nasu and his team. The evening will also feature the Kaitai Show, a live demonstration of tuna cutting, showcasing the skill and precision behind preparing top-grade tuna for sushi and sashimi.

Adding to the atmosphere, Japanese artists and performers will take the stage, including gospel singer Hikari Mukai and sanshin musician Hitomi Uratani. A special tribute will also be made to Croatian music legend Oliver Dragojević. One of the most exciting performances will come from the samurai group Katanayaichi, known for their appearances in Japanese samurai films.
Open-Air Festival with Top Chefs & Wineries
The festival will also feature an open-air programme at Trg Petra Zoranića, running daily from 11:00 to 15:00 and from 18:00 onwards. Visitors can enjoy a mix of gastronomic showcases, cultural events, and live music, with dishes prepared by renowned Croatian chefs. A special Sushi Corner will allow guests to try freshly made sushi, and ten of Zadar’s best wineries will be offering their finest selections.
