The United States Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), in agreement with the State Department and Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, have removed retired Croatian General Ante Gotovina’s from its Specially Designated National list…
Gotovina, who was acquitted of war crime charges and released from a Hague prison in 2011 after spending 7 years inside, initiated a law suit against the U.S Department of Treasury last month to lift economic sanctions imposed against him that have been in place for more than a decade.
The U.S. government listed Gotovina as a Specially Designated National in 2003, subjecting him personally to economic sanctions. After his acquittal, Gotovina, it was reported, had requested that the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control remove the designation. When they did not do so, he filed a suit in the US District Court for the District of Columbia.
