Hull City striker Nikica Jelavić has retired from international football on Saturday…
29-year-old Jelavić told coach Niko Kovač the news of his decision to leave the national team when the side arrived back to Croatia from Sofia after last night’s EURO qualifying victory over Bulgaria.
The former Everton striker explained to Kovač that he was not satisfied with his status in the squad, and that he was not prepared to sit on the bench.
“I have to admit that Jelavić surprised me and I am sorry to hear about his decision. Of course, I will accept it, and thank him form everything he has done for Croatia. I wish him all the best in life, including his club career”, said Kovač.
The striker, who had an indifferent career for the national side, was capped 36 times, scoring just six times. (pic: HNS)
