In the midst of the digital age, where the past often fades into obscurity, one individual is on a mission to revive the forgotten tales and treasures of Croatia’s Dalmatia region.
Through a labour of love and dedication, the project “Forgotten Dalmatia” has emerged, bringing to light some of the region’s most captivating stories and artefacts.
A new endeavour in the form of an online auction, which showcases a selection of rare and remarkable items that embody the essence of Dalmatia’s cultural heritage, has now gone live.
This auction represents a culmination of passion, history, and a desire to preserve the past for generations to come.
Unlike traditional auctions inundated with countless items, this virtual auction offers a more intimate experience, akin to browsing through a cherished boutique.
Here, visitors are not merely buyers but voyagers through Dalmatia’s past, uncovering gems that evoke nostalgia and stir emotions.
Among the highlights of this extraordinary collection is a marble sculpture of the Virgin Mary dating back to the 18th century.
Once part of the illustrious Mimbelli family collection in Orebić, this masterpiece is attributed to the renowned Venetian sculptor Francesco Cabianca.
“What will especially interest our people are several subjects from Croatian history, in which I expect great interest. One is Ante Pavelić’s proclamation from 1943 in which he proclaimed the return of Dalmatia to NDH, after the capitulation of Italy. This document is almost euphoric in the midst of the war in 1943 and the Ustasha poglavnik reproaches Italy for having hijacked the Croatian sea. In any case, it’s an extraordinary rarity and specialty for World War II collectors,” Forgotten Dalmatia founder Igor Goleš tells us.
Art aficionados will delight in hand-signed letters from esteemed Croatian painters Vlaho Bukovac and Celestin Medović. These intimate correspondences not only provide insight into the artistic minds of these luminaries but also offer collectors a chance to own a piece of their legacy.

Adding a contemporary flair to the auction is an oil painting by Mate Lasić Rembrandt, a modern-day maestro whose works command both admiration and intrigue. With only a handful of paintings available each year, securing one of Lasić’s creations is akin to acquiring a rare treasure imbued with artistic brilliance and mystique.
In addition to these captivating artefacts, the auction also features items such as the first bibliophile edition of the book “Forgotten Dalmatia” from 2014, a prized possession for avid readers and collectors alike.
Only 100 copies were printed and now for the first time one appears in official sale, it is almost impossible to find.
Furthermore, a ticket from the inaugural match of the Croatian national football team in 1990 serves as a nostalgic memento for fans of the beloved sport.
The auction is held until 12 May and you can visit the auction here: https://aukcije.zaboravljenadalmacija.hr/
