A Grand Slam runners-up finish for Croatian tennis player Nikola Mektić.

Mektić (29) and his Polish partner Alicia Rosolska (32) came close to winning the US Open mixed doubles title at Flushing Meadows in New York on Saturday but had to settle for second place.

Mektić and Rosolska, who were playing in their first Grand Slam together, lost to American-UK pairing of Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jamie Murray in the final 2-6, 6-3, 11-9 after being up one set and having a break point in the second set.

The Croatian/Polish team collected $70,000 USD in prize money for being runners-up.

Mektić became the third Croatian this year to reach a Grand Slam mixed doubles final after Mate Pavić won the Australian Open with Laura Siegmund and Ivan Dodig won the French Open with Latish Chan earlier this year.
