World number 7 Marin Čilić has advanced through to join countryman Borna Ćorić in the 2nd round of the US Open today.
Čilić survived an early scare from Marius Copil in his first-round match at Flushing Meadows to move into the second round when the Romanian retired in the third set with an injury.
Čilić was up 2 sets to love (7-5, 6-1) and with a 2-1 lead in the third set when Copil retired.
It was not all plain sailing however for the Croatian. Copil broke the 7th seed twice in the first set to race out to a 5-1 lead but Čilic would come back to win six games in a row to take the set and break the Romanian’s spirit.
Čilić made light work of the second set as he banged down a total of 12 aces in the match.
Čilič will face Hubert Hurkacz from Poland in the 2nd round.
