US Open: Donna Vekic into the last 16 in New York

NEW YORK, 31 August 2019 – Croatia’s Donna Vekic has joined Petra Martic in the the last 16 at the US Open after a third round victory on Saturday.
The 23rd seed Croatian had a straight sets win over Kazakh Yulia Putintseva, 6-4, 6-2 to move into the last 16.
Vekic was in impressive form on court 17 today, and after a tight opening set, she would eventually get a deserved break when the scores were locked up at 4-4.
After taking the first set, Vekic kept applying the pressure and broke Putintseva early to race to a 4-1 lead in the second set. Vekic broke again to take the set and cruise into the last 16 in 1 hour and 19 minutes.
Vekic won 86% of points on her first serve and hit 3 aces on her way to victory.
Vekic has been in good form in New York, not dropping a set yet. First she brushed past Richel Hogenkamp, before beating Estonian Kaia Kanepi, 7-5, 6-3.
Vekic will now meet Julia Goerges from Germany in the last 16. The 30-year-old German has a world ranking of No.30 and is the 26th seed at the US Open.
