Knedle sa šljivama, or plum dumplings, originated in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and have remained popular in northern parts of Croatia, as well as in the region.
The boiled potato-dough dumplings filled with plums and sprinkled with cinnamon are usually eaten as a dessert. Check out this recipe from CroChef.
Ingredients
Dumplings
Flour – 350 g / 12 oz
Potatoes – 1 kg / 2.2 pounds
Sugar – 50 g / 1.7 oz
Eggs – 2
Butter – 50 g / 1.7 oz
Lemon – 1
Salt – pinch
Filing
Plums – 20
Butter – 150 g / 5.2 oz
Sugar – 50 g / 1.7 oz
Breadcrumbs – 100 g / 3.5 oz
Cinnamon – 1 teaspoon
Instructions
1. Peel and boil the potatoes and put through a mincer.
2. Add grated lemon zest, a pinch of salt, 50 g of sugar, 50 g softened butter and 2 eggs.
3. Sift in the flour and mix together. Add flour if need be to get the right consistency.
4. Roll out the dough. Cut into squares.
5. On each square add a teaspoon of sugar and on top one plum. Close up and roll each dumpling.
7. In boiling water with a pinch of salt put in the dumplings and cook until they float to the surface.
8. In a pan heat 150 g of butter and add the breadcrumbs. Keep stirring.
9. Mix cinnamon and sugar in a bowl. Pour over the dumplings the butter and breadcrumbs then sprinkle on top the cinnamon and sugar.
