Pint-sized Croatian midfield maestro Luka Modric is the toast of Madrid after his wonder goal helped send Manchester United crashing out of the UEFA Champions League.
Modric, who started the match on the bench, was injected into the match by Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho in the 59th minute when they were behind 1-0, and it only took 7 minutes for the Croat to make his mark when he collected the ball outside the box, beat one man, and fired a curling shot past Manchester United goalkeeper to level the score.
“That was one of the most important goals of my career and I am extremely happy. But I am just happy that we went through,” said an elated Modric to reporters after the match.
A Christian Ronaldo goal 3 minutes later gave Real Madrid the 2-1 win on the night and 3-2 win on aggregate.
