Andrea Erjavec, a 23-year-old fifth-year student of elementary education at the Faculty of Education in Zagreb, Petrinja department, has taken part in the preliminary competition for Miss Universe 2023 in El Salvador.
This year, 89 countries from around the world are competing, with only 20 girls having the chance to walk the stage in the grand finale in two days on 18 November.
The Top 20 selection is based on evaluations in swimwear and evening gowns during the preliminary competition which was held on Wednesday, but the most challenging part is the interview.
“In the interview, each girl has her ten minutes to show the best of herself, express personality, attitude, opinions, and present projects she is working on and would continue to work on as the Miss Universe winner,” explained Ivana Delač, the director of public relations at the Miss Universe Croatia Directorate.
Andrea flawlessly completed the preliminary competition wearing an elegant white dress designed by Matija Vuica.
The national costume parade has always been a real show at the Miss Universe competition. The natural beauties of Lika inspired the national costume that Andrea showcased in El Salvador, and Marija Kraljević provided details.
“This year’s national costume is completely different from all previous ones. Our inspiration was the natural beauty of Lika, where we have two national parks: Plitvice Lakes and Velebit, the Gacka River, the continental, green Lika that captivates us with the richness of all shades of green, and on the other hand, we have the rugged cliffs of Velebit and rocks that dive into crystal-clear sea and seem to emerge again on the island of Pag. The complete opposite of these bare rocks is the delicate yellow flowers of Velebit degenija, a protected and endemic plant, which forms the central part of the costume. To give the costume a touch of tradition, Andrea wore the original Lika cap on her head.”

“Each of us had to choose a social issue that we care about and want to be ambassadors for, ultimately helping to solve and encouraging others to help. My project is closely related to my profession: educating young people and taking care of their physical and mental health.
For years, I have been observing my elementary school in Perušić and its struggle with renovating a sports hall that lacks heating and adequate equipment, so in winter, children train in classrooms.
The second part of my project is assistance in the reconstruction of the Faculty building in Petrinja, which was severely damaged in an earthquake. The prize for each of the top three projects is $12,000, and I know that this money, if awarded to my project, won’t solve these problems. Still, if I can make my small contribution, it will be immensely satisfying to me,” Andrea explained.
Today is a day of rest and a general rehearsal in El Salvador for tomorrow’s big day.
