The 400-year-old Green Lady of the Krka National Park in Croatia is a finalist in the European Tree of the Year 2024 contest.
The impressive ‘Murva’ mulberry tree at Skradinski buk in Krka National Park won the Croatian Tree of the Year title and is now in the running for the European title.
It is not known who planted the mulberry tree, which is estimated to be around 400 years old, but it is a symbol of the silken past and sweet present of this region. The tree has a trunk circumference of 475 cm.
“This exceptional mulberry tree has become not only a symbol of our Park but also of the long-term preservation of nature and its invaluable value. This mulberry tree represents the richness and beauty of our landscape, so we are proud that it has been chosen as a representative of our country on the European stage.
We are proud that our mulberry tree in Krka National Park is representing Croatia in this important European competition, that highlights not only the tree’s aesthetic value, but also its deep connection with the local community. Trees are guardians of history and biodiversity, and this competition raises awareness of their importance,” said Nella Slavica, the director of the Public Institute of Krka National Park.
She added, “We invite all Croatian residents and our nature lovers to cast their vote in support of our mulberry tree, and together we can show just how proud we are of our natural values and the rich cultural heritage of our nation.”
