Weddings Equal Divorces For First Time Ever In Croatia

For the first time in Croatia’s history the number of couples to get married and divorced in January this year were almost identical. In January 2013 there were 669 marriages in Croatia, whilst 602 couples legally were divorced.

Pre-global economic crisis days of 2008, weddings in Croatia outnumbered divorces by three times. In January 2008 1,241 couples got hitched, with 361 divorces.

2011 holds the record for the lowest number of marriages when the number fell below 21,000 for the first time – and even less than the war-torn year of 1991. Divorces are rapidly on the rise and according to statistics, one in every three marriages in Croatia is now failing.
