In a spectacular display of culinary craftsmanship, the Croatian town Oroslavje hosted a record-breaking event as part of its Advent celebrations.
The town, known as the gate of Croatian Zagorje thanks to its location, prepared what they proudly called the world’s largest peka—a traditional Croatian dish cooked under a bell-like dome over an open fire.
The massive feat involved 200 kilograms of meat, 150 kilograms of potatoes, and 50 kilograms of other vegetables, all cooked in a custom-made pan weighing a staggering 1,075 kilograms.
Early on Sunday morning, around 9 am, the pan was filled with 400 kilograms of food in total. Over 10 metres of firewood were used to cook the dish.
The event was meticulously planned over several days, led by head chef Stjepan Kahlin and his team.
The specially crafted dish, boasting a diameter of three metres, was made by a local company. Its lid, too heavy to lift manually, required a crane to position it. In the end, the peka produced approximately 1,500 portions of hearty, home-style food, which were distributed free to attendees.
Oroslavje’s mayor, Viktor Šimunić, captured the spirit of the occasion, saying:”The atmosphere is fantastic. People came smiling, excited to try this peka. It’s a world wonder—Paris, Vienna, Dubai, or even Zagreb don’t have this, but Oroslavje does!”
