UEFA has officially announced that the former Croatian captain Zvonimir Boban has left his high position at European football’s governing body.
UEFA started that Boban departs the organization after a mutual agreement.
Boban joined us in 2021. As the head of football, he initiated several significant projects in technical development. UEFA expresses its honor for collaborating with Zvonimir Boban and extends thanks for his dedicated service, among other things, UEFA announced.
Boban himself confirmed the departure to Croatian media, and his exit from UEFA has already been reported by the main media outlets around the world.
Boban resigned in objection to president Aleksander Ceferin’s desire to extend his presidency for another term. Ceferin, who took office in 2016, succeeding Michel Platini, implemented reforms that included a three-term limit for all executive positions. Nevertheless, he is now seeking to modify this rule to extend his tenure until 2031.
Boban described this decision as “difficult to understand” and expressed his dissatisfaction with the move, the BBC reported.
Boban, who captained the Croatian national team in the first major competition, Euro 96, and at the 1998 World Cup in France where he led the team to bronze, has expressed before in the media that he would be interested in being involved in Croatian football again and a role at the HNS or his former club Dinamo Zagreb was not ruled out.
Boban earned a total of 49 caps for Croatia and scored 12 goals. He played most of his professional career Milan with whom he won four Serie A titles and one UEFA Champions League title.
