This past weekend marked the start of the ‘peak’ tourist period in Croatia, with thousands of tourists arriving from all over the globe. The surprise package this season has been the Koreans, with unprecedented numbers flocking to Croatia this year…
In the first six months of 2014, 108,000 Koreans have visited Croatia, a massive 250% more than last year. Koreans have not been traditional visitors to Croatia, but the trend looks set to continue with national carrier Korean Air connecting Seoul and the Dalmatian city of Split with weekly flights until the end of October, and the opening of an office in South Korea promoting Croatia as a destination.
“Croatia has a lot that attracts Koreans – beautiful coral, sea, islands, culture and heritage. Koreans have only recently discovered this, thanks to a popular TV series which was filmed in Croatia,” Korea’s Ambassador to Croatia Hyung-Won said to HRT.
The Tourism Ministry in Croatia will be happy with the triple-figure growth, as the Koreans like to travel all year round and not just in the summer season as most of the Europeans do, hence extending the tourist season in the country.
